Erik Bedard was acquired by the Seattle Mariners during the off-season from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Kam Mickolio, Chris Tillman, and Tony Butler. This would turn out to be one of Bill Bavasi's final blunders.
The move was heralded by members of the media and the Front Office who believed Seattle was only one TOR SP away from winning a division title. Unfortunately, no one seemed to realize that Seattle's 2007 season was rather flukey, and some regression to the mean was likely in order. Bedard only managed a few starts before succumbing to a hip injury which limited him in the early part of the season. When the 2008 season tanked in early May, the injured Bedard became one of the central players blamed for the team's collapse. One of Bedard's most vocal critics was Geoff Baker, who only months earlier praised the team for trading the farm for him. Some suspect the only reason Baker seems to hate Erik is because he's a dick towards the media (which has proven to be rather amusing).
Baker as well as most of his media companions and the casual fans regularly chastised Bedard for not pitching despite frequent pain in his hip, back, and eventually shoulder. Many went as far as accusing Bedard of lacking dedication and passion for the game, labeling him as another one of the clubhouses many cancers (a list that includes Ichiro, Adrian Beltre, Felix Hernandez, and other players who are known to posses talent).
On September 17th, it was reported that Bedard (who hadn't pitched since July 4th due to shoulder discomfort) had suffered a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder, ending his 2008 season and quite possibly ending his tenure as a Seattle Mariner. The trade to acquire him has officially become the worst transaction in both theory and in results.
Those who questioned Bedard's toughness and dedication to the game are encouraged to offer him an apology and promptly go fuck themselves.
